Confirmation of Payee

A layer of protection for payments.

What is Confirmation of Payee?

Confirmation of Payee is a security feature designed to reduce mistaken and fraudulent payments. The service matches the bank account details entered by a payer with the account details held by the recipient’s bank and displays a match outcome to the payer.

Confirmation of Payee will be available in 2025 for Indue’s NPP clients to help safeguard people and businesses from fraud, scams and mistaken payments.

How Confirmation of Payee delivers greater protection

Pay with confidence

When making payments by BSB and account number, Confirmation of Payee gives customers the added confidence that their money is going where it is intended.

Avoid Mistakes

Account details entered are automatically checked with those held by the business’ or individuals financial institution and displays as a match outcome to help avoid mistaken payments, which can be difficult to have returned.

Reduce Scams

Confirmation of Payee gives customers greater protection from Scams as they are able to spot a potential scam payee before they send any money.

How it works

When you’re sending money to a business or person using their BSB and account number, Confirmation of Payee will check the account details you’ve entered with the account details held by the recipient’s bank and let you know the match outcome.

Using this information, you can choose whether you want to go ahead and make the payment, pause and check the details again – or stop the payment altogether.

Understanding Match outcomes

Match outcomes give your customers important information to help them decide what to do next with their payment. If they think they’ve entered the account details incorrectly, they can reconfirm account details with the intended recipient and re-enter them before making the payment. Or if something doesn’t seem right, they can decide not to proceed. Confirmation of Payee provides new layers of protection for your customers, and control into their hands.

Match

  • The account details entered match the details held by the business or individuals’ financial institution.
  • Customers can continue with their payment with more confidence.

Close match

  • The details entered closely match the details held by the payee’s financial institution.
  • Customers should recheck the details and if unsure contact the payee.
  • If something doesn’t seem right, customers can decide not to proceed.
  • If they continue, it may be difficult to retrieve funds if they are sent to the wrong account.

No match

  • The account details entered do not match the details held by the payee’s financial institution.
  • Customers should recheck the details or contact the payee.
  • If something doesn’t seem right, they can decide not to proceed.
  • If they continue, it may be difficult to retrieve funds if they’re sent to the wrong account.

Error

  • The service could not confirm the account details entered.

Depending on the error received, customers can try one of the following options:

  • Decide not to proceed with the payment.
  • Ignore the error and proceed with the payment. It may be difficult to retrieve funds if they’re sent to the wrong account.
  • Contact the payee to check the details.

FAQs

Confirmation of Payee is an industry-wide service that adds a layer of protection for payments to a BSB and account number. It checks the account name, BSB and account number the customer has entered against the details held by the recipient’s bank and lets the customer know whether it’s a match. This can help customers make informed decisions before they make a payment, reducing the risk of scams and mistaken payments.

Confirmation of Payee is an initiative of Australian Payments Plus, the same organisation that also provides trusted payment services like BPAY®, Osko®, eftpos®, PayID® and PayTo®.

We are committed to rolling out this technology throughout 2025. Implementing an industry-wide Confirmation of Payee service required a significant build and investment. Australia is only one of a handful of countries to have this anti-scam technology available across the industry.

With 15.4 billion transactions worth $2.5 trillion occurring every year across the banking sector, the design and build of an industry wide Confirmation of Payee service is a major undertaking. It’s further demonstration that Australian banks are leading the way when it comes to safeguarding their customers.

Implementation of the Scam-Safe Accord is well progressed. Initiatives related to biometric checks, limiting payments to high-risk crypto platforms, enhanced intelligence sharing and the development of anti-scam strategies are all complete. Banks are now rolling-out Confirmation of Payee and introducing warnings and delays.

Account match means the details the customer entered matches the bank records of the intended recipient.

‘Close match’ means the details they’ve entered closely match the bank records of the intended recipient.

‘No match’ means that the details they’ve entered do not match the bank records of the intended recipient.

If the customer wants to get paid without any confusion or potential delays, they should share the account name, BSB and account number for their bank account. This includes using the correct spelling and any middle names that form part of your account name. This is especially important if they’re a business with an account name that differs from the name they’re using to take a payment; for instance, if they have a different trading name for a particular part of their business.

Names with special characters, like apostrophes (‘), will still match without being entered. For example, enter “O’Brien” as “O Brien” or “Obrien”. Or an account name with an ampersand (&) such as Paper & Pen can be entered as Paper Pen.

If a customer enters the wrong account details, they can end up sending their money to the wrong recipient. This can be difficult and time-consuming to resolve, which is why it’s important to check the accuracy of the details entered before sending money.
